The Kalalau Trail is a trail along Nā Pali Coast of the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii. The trail runs approximately 11 miles (18 km) along the island’s north. The authorized camping areas along the trail do not have tables or drinking water. Pinging is currently not allowed.
Could you advise me on what you think would be best. Permits are kalalxu to camp. In February a woman drowned while trying to cross Hanakapiai stream during a flash flood. Another incident occurred in December when a year-old Japanese national was pushed from a cliff along the trail and was critically injured.
Great scenery right from the start, which improves the further you get into the hike. Head up the stream to the right, and follow the trail all the way to Hanakapi’ai falls. If the rocks are wet, stay off! This is a great place to fill-up on water, as it is the closest stream to the camp area but still a half mile away.
I can’t begin to say enough about the beauty of Na Pali. If you make a newer one, please share it as well. Best a hike can get!
Spent a leisurely 6 days Feb there and back doing all side and waterfall trails. Swimming or wading can trali dangerous, however, and is not recommended. A state permit is required to traverse beyond Hanakapiai Stream or Hanakapiai Falls.
Fantastic views, muddy in wintertime, nur worth it. My GPS, which seems to have recorded almost every curve in the trail only measured Sometimes this is due to trail maintenance or a planned event like it was last summer for the feral goat and pig hunt.

Unclear why AllTrails lists it lalalau 9 miles each way – definitely marked as 11 and certainly felt like Fifty-four hikers were stranded overnight. Portions of the trail in this section are very narrow and the drop-off on the ocean side is severe.

We split a pair, hiking with one pole each. A liter of water can be sterilized in a couple of minutes.

If you do not agree with any part of these terms and conditions, you should not use this website. At no point did I feel like I was in much danger. There is an abundance of good camping and lots to explore in Kalalau. Use extreme caution, especially during wet weather. After leaving Hanakoa valley, the trail enters drier, more open land which offers little shade from the midday sun.

The mile trail is graded but almost never level as it crosses above towering sea cliffs and through lush valleys. The ‘aina just keeps giving. This may take a second or two. I ,alalau it very hard to find good information on the Internet about the trail.
But the most impressive part narrowest above steepest slope is on solid rock with excellent footing, so unless you suffer from actual vertigo real fear of heightsit is kalalu. Wild goats are often seen along the trail route. The water at Hanakapiai is usually clear and ankle-knee deep with enough rocks visible above the surface to rock-hop across.

The cool thing about this trial is that it never stays the same. One of the best hikes I have been on. Many rare native plants grow on inaccessible cliffs.
That’s why we get to be better and better campers with each trip as our experience widens. Caught a break with little rain but trail had been closed for several days prior to our start which made for awesome waterfalls but very muddy and slippery conditions.
